Council Creates NAEP Dashboards

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is the only representative and continuing assessment of student achievement in the nation. Results from NAEP, known as the "Nation’s Report Card,” provide information on what students know and can do in subjects such as math and reading, as well as information on groups of students (e.g., by race/ethnicity, by gender, by free- reduced price lunch eligibility). The NAEP Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA) measures the achievement of fourth- and eighth-grade students in 26 large urban school districts.
In an effort to streamline access to and use of the robust set of available NAEP data, the Council of the Great City Schools (CGCS) has recently developed interactive data-visualization tools that provide NAEP results by jurisdiction, student group and trends over time for grades 4 and 8 in mathematics and reading from 2003-2022.
The CGCS NAEP dashboards were created by the Council’s research team, composed of Director of Research, Akisha Osei Sarfo; Research Manager Chester Holland; and Research Manager Brian Garcia. The dashboards were designed specifically for use by TUDA district leaders, but are available for public use by all member districts.
“The Council’s NAEP dashboard will enable not only TUDA districts but others interested in understanding more about student performance and progress across our nation and in large city school districts to easily access and interact with NAEP data,” said Sarfo. “The Council is pleased to offer this tool.”
The Council’s NAEP dashboards, along with a technical guide to aid in use, may be accessed on the Council’s website at: https://www.cgcs.org/naepdashboard.
Questions about the development or use of the dashboards may be directed to Osei Sarfo at asarfo@cgcs.org.
