-
U.S News & World Report recently released its 2023 rankings of "Best High Schools," with The Early College at Guilford in Greensboro, N.C., being named No.1 out of more than 25,000 public high schools in 50 states and the District of Columbia.
The Early College at Guilford, which serves 197 students, offers students in ninth and 10th grades honors and Advanced Placement courses. The school’s partnership with Guilford College enables students beginning in the 11th grade to take college courses with undergraduate students.
"I am incredibly proud of the hardworking students and staff at The Early College at Guilford," said Guilford County Schools Superintendent Whitney Oakley. "The recognition is well deserved, and I am grateful for the partnership with Guilford College, which supports our students' success in the classroom and beyond."
The other top school from a district represented by the Council of the Great City Schools was the School for Advanced Studies in Miami, which ranked third.
Overall, six schools in districts represented by the Council of the Great City Schools ranked in the top 20 of the "Best High Schools" list. Other urban schools ranked include:
- The School for Talented and Gifted (TAG) in Dallas Independent School District, No. 6;
- Academic Magnet School in Charleston County School District, No. 8;
- Payton College Preparatory High School in Chicago Public Schools, No. 10; and
- Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women's Leadership School in Dallas Independent School District; No. 18.
U.S. News a World Report used six metrics for its ranking — college readiness, state assessment proficiency, state assessment performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth, and graduation rate. They also create the list using data from the U.S. Department of Education, statewide assessment tests, the College Board, and the International Baccalaureate.
