New Superintendent in Austin, Interim Leader Named in Toronto

  • Stephanie Elizalde Texas’ Austin Independent School District recently selected Stephanie Elizalde to lead the 80,000-student school district. Elizalde is the district’s first Latina superintendent and succeeds Paul Cruz, who left the district to become a professor at the University of Texas at Austin.

    Since 2015, Elizalde served as chief of schools for the Dallas Independent School District, the second largest school district in Texas. She has held various positions in the district, including teacher, principal, assistant superintendent and deputy chief. 

    Interim Leader Named in Toronto Carlene Jackson

    Canada’s Toronto School District Board recently appointed Carlene Jackson as its interim director of education. Jackson was the district’s associate director, business operations and service excellence and will succeed John Malloy, who recently retired. 

    Pittsburgh Superintendent Receives Contract Extension 

    Anthony Hamlet Anthony Hamlet has served as the superintendent of Pittsburgh Public Schools since 2016 and will remain at the helm through 2025, as a result of a new five-year contract extension. 

    Under his leadership, all schools were provided with a nurse, additional social workers and counselors were added, graduation rates improved and career and technical programs expanded.
