Adrian Maclin’s choir class at Cordova High School in Memphis-Shelby County Schools feels like more than just a class. For nearly 20 years, he has dedicated himself to shaping students’ lives through music, and now, his hard work is being recognized. The Recording Academy and Grammy Museum recently named Maclin the 2025 Grammy Music Educator of the Year, an honor that recognizes his exceptional contributions to music education and his profound impact on students.
The award was announced during a January “CBS Mornings” segment, recognizing Maclin’s extraordinary impact on music education. He officially accepted his award in February during the Grammy weekend festivities, concluding with the 67th Grammy Awards.
Known for his philosophy of fostering a “choir family” rather than just a music class, Maclin teaches life lessons alongside musical excellence. He holds his students to high standards—not just in their performances, but also in academics and personal growth.
With this honor comes a $10,000 prize for Maclin and an additional $10,000 grant for Cordova High’s music program.
Under his leadership, Cordova’s choirs have performed on national stages like Carnegie Hall and at the Tennessee Music Educators Association conference. Yet for Maclin, the true reward lies in the growth and success of his students beyond the music room.
In a CBS news segment, reflecting on his motivation, Maclin shared, “It’s the joy of seeing them be successful, knowing that the little part that I did made a change in your life.”
Maclin’s former students describe him as more than a teacher. To many, he’s a mentor and a father figure who has helped shape their futures. One former student shared, “Thank you for believing in a kid who probably sometimes didn’t believe in himself.” Another said Maclin’s guidance “forever changed the course of my life.”
