Two 2023 graduates from the Detroit Public Schools Community District were recently honored at a school board meeting for winning the 2023 Green-Garner college scholarship.
A $6,000 scholarship was presented to Khris Crumsey, a graduate from Southeastern High School, and a $4,000 scholarship was presented to Maiya Pickett, a graduate from Cass Technical High School.
The students were selected to receive the scholarships by Detroit Schools Superintendent Nikolai Vitti, who was the winner of the 2022 Green-Garner Award at the Council of the Great City Schools’ 67th Annual Fall Conference in Orlando, Fla.
Sponsored by the Council and Scholastic Inc., the award is bestowed upon a school board member one year and a superintendent the next. The winner presents a $10,000 scholarship to a graduating senior in the spring.
Crumsey, who played football, will attend Adrian College in Michigan, and plans to obtain a degree in graphic and gaming design. Pickett, who was a violinist in her school’s orchestra, plans to major in fine arts at the University of Michigan with career ambitions of working in children’s entertainment.
In addition to the scholarship, the two students will receive mentoring from Superintendent Vitti.
The Green-Garner Award is named for Richard Green, first African American chancellor of the New York City school system, and Edward Garner, African-American school board member and former school board president of the Denver Public Schools.
