The 2025 top award for urban education leadership will be given to a school board member from one of the 81 big-city school districts represented by the Council of the Great City Schools.
Nominees are sought for the 36th Annual Green-Garner Award, named in honor of Richard Green, the former chancellor of the New York City school system, and Edward Garner, former school board president for Denver Public Schools.
Sponsored by the Council and Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education, and media company, the award is given in alternating years to an outstanding school board member and superintendent from the largest urban school systems in the nation.
The winner will receive a $10,000 college scholarship to be given to a student in his or her school district.
The Green-Garner Award will be presented at the Council’s 69th Annual Fall Conference in October in Philadelphia. The deadline to apply for the award is August 22.
Queen Smith Award
Nominations are also being sought for the 2025 Queen Smith Award for Commitment to Urban Education.
The award honors an urban school teacher who has made significant contributions to education and the community and is sponsored by the MacMillan/McGraw Hill Publishing Company.
The $5,000 award will be presented at the Council’s Annual Fall Conference in October in Philadelphia. The deadline to apply is August 22.
Applications for both awards can be accessed on the Council’s website at: https://www.cgcs.org/awardsscholarships.
