New Leadership at Council to Begin

  • Marcia Andrews, a member of the school board of Florida’s School District of Palm Beach County, will become chair of the Council of the Great City Schools’ Board of Directors for a one-year term effective on July 1, 2024.

The board consists of over 150 members comprised of the superintendent and a school board member from each of the 78 big city school districts represented by the Council, the only national organization of this structure and exclusively representing the needs of urban public schools.

Following the resignation in February of former Portland Public Schools Superintendent Guadalupe Guererro, who was the chair of the Council, the Palm Beach County school board member has been serving as acting chair since January. Andrews, a Palm Beach native and alumni of the district, was first elected to the school board in 2010.

Sonja Brookins Santelises, CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools, will assume the role of chair-elect. And Valerie Davis, school board member for California’s Fresno Unified School District, will assume the role secretary treasurer.
