Urban Schools Win Green Ribbon Awards

  • James N. Gamble Montessori High School in Cincinnati is the first Ohio public school to be selected as a Green Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. The school was one of 27 schools across the nation recently selected as a 2021 Green Ribbon recipient.

Green Ribbon Schools are recognized annually for reducing environmental impact and costs and committing to healthy, safe and sustainable learning environments for students and staff.

Students in the agricultural program at Gamble Montessori High School organize an annual farmer’s market called the Montessori Market where 40 local vendors sell fresh fruits and vegetables to the local community. The school has a state-of-the-art building automation system to ensure fresh air circulation and in March, was presented with a first-place award given to energy-efficient buildings from the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers.

“The work done by Gamble Montessori High School is a wonderful example of the academic and operational innovation and leadership happening each day at Cincinnati Public Schools,” said Cincinnati Schools Superintendent Laura Mitchell in a press release.

In addition to Gamble Montessori High School, the Magnet School for Environmental Studies and Community Wellness in Brooklyn, N.Y.; the Clement Avenue School in Milwaukee; and Francis Scott Key Elementary School in Washington, D.C.; were also named 2021 Green Ribbon Schools.
