  • Dr. Dexter Moore Jr. is an Oakland-born leader who has lived, led, and learned from communities around the country, including Los Angeles, Miami, Boston, and Detroit. 

    Dr. Moore received his doctorate in the Education Leadership Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He was also a Rackham Merit Fellow at the University of Michigan, where he earned a master’s in Education Leadership and Policy. 

    Dexter currently serves as the Chief of Staff for the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD). In this role, he acts as the confidential thought partner and strategic advisor to the Superintendent, driving the execution of short and long-term priority initiatives. 

    He is also responsible for aligning district strategic initiatives, partnerships and policies across all divisions to the OUSD Strategic Plan, and works closely with the Board of Education to develop and implement district policies, budgets, and long-term strategic plans. Dexter plays a key role in directing the allocation of City, County, and State resources for the District. He collaborates closely with key stakeholders, including the Mayor, City Administrator, Chiefs of Police and Violence 

    Prevention, to strategically coordinate comprehensive systems of support for schools, District leaders, and community partners.

    Dexter began his career teaching middle school students in Oakland. He has also held school leadership roles in public and independent schools. Dr. Moore has been recognized for his strategic innovation, meaningful collaboration with community partners, and profound ability to deeply listen and build strong and effective teams. His professional trajectory has transcended the educational ecosystem, and he considers those experiences to uniquely inform his approach to leading hearts, minds and systems in service of improved educational experiences and outcomes for students. 

    Outside of work, Dexter enjoys creating and indulging in culinary classics with his wife, spending quality time with family, and exchanging Spotify playlists and hearty laughter with his friends over competitive games of dominoes.
