  • Tonya Harris is the Director of Communications for the Council of the Great City Schools, where she oversees all of the Council’s communications efforts, which are designed to increase awareness of the Council’s activities and to strengthen public confidence in urban education. She is the editor of the Urban Educator digital newsletter, oversees the Council’s website and social media, and cultivates relationships with national media outlets to help position the Council as a go-to-source on urban education. She also works with communication directors in the Council’s 78-member school districts to provide them with resources to support their local efforts. In addition, Tonya coordinates the Council's Blue Ribbon Corporate Advisory Group. Before becoming the Communications Director, she served as the Council’s Communications Manager and Communications Specialist.

    Prior to joining the Council, Tonya served as the public relations assistant for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., the largest African-American women’s organization in the country.

    Tonya holds a master’s degree from American University in interactive journalism and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park.

    FUN FACTS: Tonya enjoys Tae Bo and cardio kickboxing classes, reading, traveling, and taking care of her growing collection of houseplants.
