    Tonya Harris is the communications director for the Council of the Great City Schools, coordinating press relations and public information for the Council. She is the editor of the award-winning Urban Educator newsletter and develops various forms of communications through advertising, electronic productions and special events as well as publications.  Prior to joining the Council, Harris served as the public relations assistant for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., the largest African-American women’s organization in the country. She has also worked as an editorial assistant at CQ Weekly, a national publication covering public policy and legislation. Her work has appeared in Principal magazine, the Chronicle of Higher Education, National Journal, Essence and several publications published by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
     
    Tonya holds a master's degree in interactive journalism from American University in Washington, D.C., and a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park. She is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and volunteers as a judge with the Baltimore Urban Debate League. In her spare time, she enjoys taking Tae Bo classes, reading and traveling.
