                                         In this session, participants will work in teams to examine and expand on  
                              extensions of sample lesson units needed for working with ELLs. 
                              will also discuss the organizational supports and resources that are needed to
                              do this type of work for the full implementation of the Common Core.

                                         This session will feature a presentation by the Executive Director of the
 Council on the challenging climate facing public urban education and the
 urgency behind the Council’s work, anchored in the Common Core, to improve
 achievement in our urban centers.  Mike Casserly will also highlight the
Council’s work that is specifically addressing the needs of ELLs and Language

10:30 am - noon        Cognitive Strategies Approach to Teaching Professional Reading and Writing to ELLS in 
                                Dr. Olson will share a cognitive-strategies based intervention designed to
                                enhance the expertise of teachers as they prepare English learners to 
                                interpret complex texts and write well-reasoned analytical essays called for
                                in the Common Core State Standards. 
Positive student outcomes from a 
                                quasi-experimental research study and a randomized field trial involving 104 
                                teachers and over 3000 students (88 percent of whom were ELs) in a large 
                                urban district in the Great City Schools network will be shared.

                                         Council staff will share with participants the various Council data collection and
                               reporting projects and discuss ways to address the ongoing challenges related
                               to these efforts.
  Participants will hear about the latest report on Educational
                               Outcomes for Hispanic students and will have
a chance to review excerpts of
                               the upcoming report on ELLs in Council member districts. 
Finally, participants
                               will provide feedback related to the creation of the Council’s Dashboard.

                               Monitor ELL Achievement 
                                         Presenters will discuss their district's experience with creating effective data
                               collection and reporting systems related to ELL data.
Districts will share with
                               participants the process by which such systems were created and the
                               challenges of maintaining them as viable systems. 
Participants will engage in
                               discussions to help determine what key components should be part of model
                               comprehensive data systems for ELLs at the district level.
