Council Honors Guilford County Schools for Improving Student Achievement

WASHINGTON, July 12 –Guilford County Schools (GCS) in Greensboro, N.C., was recently presented with the “Advancing Excellence and Equity in Urban Education Curriculum Leadership Award” at the Council of the Great Schools’ Curriculum, Research and Instructional Leaders Meeting in Portland, Ore. Sponsored by Curriculum Associates, the award recognizes Council member districts for successfully implementing cross-functional initiatives designed to boost academic achievement. 

Guilford County Schools won for its collaborative efforts to implement learning hubs, high-dosage tutoring, and expand two major academic recovery programs. These efforts continue to enable district leadership to problem solve as a team and create more efficient processes to better identify and provide equitable access to accelerated learning for all GCS students as they continue to recover from declines in achievement experienced as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. 

“This award is bestowed on Council member districts that create initiatives using collaborative efforts to solve complex challenges,” said Dr. Robin Hall, the Council’s chief of schools. “We honor and recognize the district leadership team from GCS for breaking their organizational silos to work toward a common goal resulting in improved student outcomes for all students.”  

The award was presented to Guilford County Schools Superintendent Whitney Oakley, Chief Academic Officer Jusmar Maness, and Chief Performance Officer Sonya Stephens. Guilford Chief of Schools Marshall Matson, Chief Human Resources Officer Shirley Morrison, and Chief Communications Officer Tracey Lewis were also recognized for their efforts.
