It is the special mission of America’s urban public schools to educate the nation’s most diverse student body to the highest academic standards and prepare them to contribute to our democracy and the global community.

Goals of the Great City Schools:

  • To educate all urban school students to the highest academic standards.
  • To lead, govern, and manage our urban public schools in ways that advance the education of our children and enhance the effectiveness of an efficiency of our institutions.
  • To bolster the public’s confidence in urban public education.

In The Enduring Promise of America’s Great City Schools, Dr. Michael Casserly wrote of the extraordinary capacity of urban public school systems to serve children and families amid persistent social and economic challenges. That promise, however, is profoundly threatened when federal actions introduce fear, instability, and trauma into the daily lives of children and the schools that serve them.

WASHINGTON, July 10 – Washoe County School District (WCSD) in Reno, Nevada, was recently awarded the “Informing Progress in Urban Education” award at the Council of the Great City Schools’ Curriculum, Research, and Instructional Leaders Meeting in Detroit. Sponsored by NWEA, this prestigious recognition honors WCSD for developing Insight, a groundbreaking early warning system driven by a fully homegrown, research-based predictive algorithm.
