Secretary Paige, Sen. Clinton to Address Urban Educators
WASHINGTON, March 8 - U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., will address the nation's urban school leaders at the Council of the Great City Schools' Annual Legislative/Policy Conference, March 17-20, at the Watergate Hotel here.
Paige is no stranger to urban educators since he recently stepped down as superintendent of the Houston Independent School District to lead President Bush's education agenda. The Council's 1999 Richard R. Green Award winner for excellence in urban education speaks at a noon luncheon on March 18 at the hotel located at 2650 Virginia Ave., N.W.
A longtime advocate for children and families, Clinton, who serves on the Senate's Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, addresses the gathering on March 19 at a 12:30 p.m. luncheon.
On the evening of March 19, Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., has been invited to speak at the conference's Capitol Hill reception, which will be held at the Rayburn House Building, Room 2175, Independence Avenue and South Capitol Street, S.W.
More than 300 urban school superintendents, senior administrators, board members and deans of colleges of education will convene to discuss major federal policy and legislative initiatives during the four-day conference.
