Norfolk Schools Superintendent Named Nation's Top Urban Educator
WASHINGTON, Oct. 28 - Superintendent John O. Simpson of Virginia's Norfolk Public Schools has received this year's Richard R. Green Award, which recognizes the nation's top educator for outstanding contributions to urban education. The award was presented recently at the Council of the Great City Schools' 46th Annual Fall Conference in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
The nation's top prize in urban education is given each year by the Council, a coalition of the nation's largest urban public school districts, and the ARAMARK ServiceMaster Facility Services company in memory of the late Richard R. Green, who led the Minneapolis and New York City public school systems in the 1980s.
Dr. Simpson became the superintendent of Norfolk Public Schools in 1998. Under his leadership, the school system has implemented a comprehensive accountability system, focused on improving student achievement, and has made important strides in narrowing the achievement gap between students of different racial groups.
As the recipient of the Green Award, Dr. Simpson receives a $10,000 college scholarship to present to a deserving high school senior of his choice from Norfolk Public Schools or from his high school alma mater.
